Ofrendas 2023: The Art of Olinalá Lacquerware with Flor Espinal & Vicente Castillo Dionicio

Hijos del Sol welcomes back Flor Espinal and her husband, Vicente Castillo Dionicio, who come from generations of lacquerware artisans in Olinalá, Guerrero, Mexico. In this Ofrendas 2023 Advanced Workshop, participants will learn about the beautiful process of lacquerware made in Olinalá from locally sourced wood, chia seed oil, ground stone and tree resin. Flor and Vicente will teach participants about this Indigenous tradition of decoration, which is among the oldest Folk art traditions in the world.

Each participant will be provided with a wooden base and instructed on how to cover their wood with a paste-like base coat of chia oil and paint with earth pigments in order to create detailed and bright designs. All materials provided, but bring your own apron if you’d like.
